And Just Before I Leave For School...

...I notice this morning's copy of the newspaper.  Chee Soon Juan and his fellow party members served with summons for speaking in public without a licence, and Chee Siok Chin's application faces dismissal because she did not pay her $5000 deposit ahead of the deadline.  Now too late to pay.  Tragic.  I go to the hawker centre and talk to the auntie selling hor fun and the next door chicken rice uncle, considered speaking in public without a licence or not? As for Chee Siok Chin, I predicted her appeal would never survive in court.  Guess it won't even get to see the light of day in court after all.  But why not simply withdraw and re-submit it, this time paying ahead of the deadline? Are there more legal loopholes I'm missing?

Nothing like a little Opposition suffering to brighten my morning.

SDP has gotten itself to blame. They can't just go out there to 'curse' and 'swear' at the Lees. They have to raise all the sensitive questions for them to answer and the people will judge the Lees based on that. What SDP had done was suicidal. They deprived themselves of being voted into parliament to pinpoint questions on behalf of the people.

If there are more people like gayle around then people will begin to think. In the past they just swallow what is fed to them.

>>condone economic blackmail in the name of "pragmatism"<<

Very interesting domain of thought.

One disturbing trend I see in Singapore is our obsessive cling on rhetoric labels. In fact, such serves as the convenient tool to the politicalization of the way of lives. It shifts our sight forward without noticing the price that hid behind the veil.

Singaporeans are not political apathies but rather politicalised to behave in a certain way.

Maybe they should go into the schools and take a look at what the students are saying in "public" (their canteen?) Bound to find some anti-government sentiment in there, especially among the older students. They don't arrest them?

Perhaps it's time to take it up a notch, play eye for an eye. For one, we generally should stop merely having "prominent opposition leaders" and give the government a mouthful.

If I took a taxi in Singapore, 70% of the time they will complain about the establishment. I guess they speak to you if they feel they have an audience . The problem seems to be we don't make connections among ourselves?

I'm not sure if we should wait till 2011, or opt for incremental change, but (moral) civil disobedience is an important tool to be utilised. No one seems to respect the laws concerning online regulation anyway, but when it comes to real life speaking I guess we seem to chicken out.

Why is there even a $5000 deposit? That's a really high amount for court fees.

In Malaysia they sell books by Anwar. In Singapore can you get books by CSJ and Francis Seow?

Malaysia , US and Britain all have active opposition parties and yet foreign investments still flow in. In a true democracy rain or shine there are investors who will put their money there.

I feel the frustration too. When the PAP ministers talk to the press, make an adhoc statement, do they have a permenent permit to speak in public? But when the opposition speak in public, they need a permit? It is true, we need to keep up this level of awareness amongst the young so that incremental changes can happen. Thanks again Gayle.

Expect more cosmetic changes from the PAP when it comes to reforms. It just remains to see if people will put up with such cosmetic changes.

it goes to show that that pap has not changed one single bit despite their assurance that they will move down to the commoner and behave. gomez investigation incident, charges against the chees and eminent striking off of the legal case ... all these just show that all the organs of the government are at the command fo the pap.

and they will tell us these are serious stuffs ... must treat them with upmost seriousness and properly lest foreign investments will not come.

Perhaps Gayle's willing ascent to the peak of Mt Olympus requires a little energy-boost along the way? Say would a tiny bag of peanuts and some carrots suffice? Don'ch worry, the serfs and peasants would gladly fund such necessary expenses. Embrace the lightning!

Notice the government will take serious action against political figures, but have a light touch with regards to the common man in terms of Mr Brown, Mr Miyagi & a host of other internet population. Rationale is simple: most people will not feel connected with the political figures or parties to fight for them, or that politics is a "dirty business" and we should not get involved.

The truth is usually somewhere in between. So even if what's on the internet is generally anti-PAP, it reflects that the PAP is not doing as well as it should be.

Those in power will do their utmost to retain that privilege, and screw the disadvantageous plebeians if necessary... the law is written by those within the power-game. Not likely they gonna screw themselves over with loopholes. The psychological impact is this: by the "benevolence" of those in power, punish those who oppose they will, but with a front to show the rest they punish fairly. Those in power provide sweeteners to people below them - we know u don't deserve this, but look, we will give u a certain amount of freedom, opinion, and incentive. Go make full use of it (but remember, u don't deserve it but we still give it to u anyway).

This may seems a bias view of events: but think, when those in power, do u want those who are below u to rise up to your level or above? What gain but a "utopian" landscape is there to this end of equality...
